Luxor is a major travel destination in Upper (southern) Egypt and the Nile Valley. Luxor was once the religious capital of Middle Kingdom and New Kingdom Egypt, having therefore a great deal of monuments and cultural heritage - vast temples, ancient royal tombs, spectacular desert and river landscape and a busy modern life.

REASONS TO GO

The Valley of the Kings

The temple complexes of Luxor and Karnak

Take a felucca cruise on the Nile

TO AVOID

Avoid the extreme heat on the desert during summer.

ORIENTATION

The old capital of Egypt, Thebes, was located on the West margin of the Nile, where the majority of the ruins and tombs are.

The modern city of Luxor is situated on the East bank, where we can find the train and bus stations, taxis, hotels, restaurants and a few museums.

On the East Bank you will find the Luxor and the Karnak Temples, the Luxor Museum and the Mummification Museum.

On the West Bank you will find the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens, the Medinet Habu (memorial temple of Ramesses III), The Ramesseum (memorial temple of Ramesses II) and the Tombs of the Nobles, among other important sites.

BEST TIME TO GO

The best time to visit is in the cooler months between November and March.

HOW TO GET THERE

By plane

Luxor International Airport is located 11 km from the city centre and has several domestic and international flights.

To reach your destination from the airport, you can take a shuttle provided by your hotel or take a taxi. The journey takes around 15 minutes to the city centre

By train

It’s also possible to travel by train to Luxor from some cities like Cairo, Aswan and even Alexandria

By bus

Buses leave frequently from behind the Luxor Temple, to most major cities

By boat

There are boat trips from Luxor to Aswan and also on Lake Nasser to Abu Simbel. These are probably the most enjoyable and fascinating way to get there if you have time.

TRAVELLING AROUND

By bike

Luxor has many rental shops for bikes and a great many hotels also hire out bicycles.

By taxi

Taxis are abundant in Luxor and an easy way to move around the city.

By boat

A crucial way of getting between the East and West banks of Luxor is to use a boat. You can take a Felucca or the blue local ferry. Taxis are available at the ferry terminal on both sides, and the trip takes just a few minutes.
