Egypt is a country located in north-eastern Africa and its capital is the big city of Cairo. The country is bordered by Jordan and Saudi Arabia (to the east across the Red Sea), Sudan (to the south), Libya (to the west) and Israel and the Gaza Strip (to the north-east). The country is delimited by the Mediterranean and Red Seas (to the north and east correspondingly) and geographically dominated both by the Nile River and its fertile valley, and by the Eastern and Western deserts.
Egypt is world known as the home of the ancient civilization, with its pyramids, temples, hieroglyphs and mummies. But Egypt has also an important medieval heritage, left by the Coptic Christianity and Islam - ancient churches, monasteries and mosques scatter the Egyptian landscape.
