Santiago de Chile is the capital city and the political, economic and cultural centre of Chile. Santiago is located in the central valley of Chile between the eastern Andes mountain range and the western Cordillera of the Coast to the west. Its metropolitan area has over six million inhabitants.

The city hosts many colonial churches, museums, theatres vibrant markets, rich street life and an astonishingly varied restaurant, jazz clubs and nightclubs scene.

As it is positioned so centrally, it makes it possible to ski in the nearby Andes and go to the seaside, all in the same day.

REASONS TO GO

Cerro San Cristábal - from the top there is a stunning view over the city

Colonial churches, typical markets, vibrant street life

The precious Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino

ORIENTATION

Most of the city's tourist attractions are to be found in the small downtown area located between the Rio Mapocho (Mapocho River), Avenida Bernardo O'Higgins (the Alameda) and Cerro Santa Lucía.

Bellavista, on the northern side of the river and below Cerro San Cristobál, has many handicraft shops, restaurants and nightlife.

Santiago's Central Market is located on the southern side of the Rio Mapocho, and besides the fresh products, has also a great choice of restaurants.

The city has plenty of Palaces and churches from the colonial era, really worth seeing.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

The weather is quite cold and rainy in the winter. Summers are very hot and reasonably dry, bus sometimes moist. Between September and November is a good time to visit the city.

HOW TO GET THERE

Arturo Merino Benitez Airport is located 25km (16 miles) northwest of the city.

To get to the city centre you can take a taxi or a mini van. Tur-bus and Centropuerto operate shuttle buses that depart every 30 minutes, stopping at city centre locations.

TRAVELLING AROUND

The Metro system, Metro de Santiago is probably the best way to move around the city, with five lines operating daily.

Buses are also modern and generally punctual. The Tarjeta Bip! travel card can be used on both buses and the Metro.
