Madeira is an archipelago located in the Atlantic Ocean and a region of Portugal. The archipelago is formed by the inhabited islands of Madeira and Porto Santo, and two groups of uninhabited islands: the Desertas and the Selvagens.
These islands, positioned just 310 miles from Africa, have a pleasant weather all year round, being for that known as the Islands of eternal spring. In New Years Eve, this destination is very popular for its amazing fireworks (among the biggest in the world).
REASONS TO GO
The Levadas - an impressive system of aqueducts.
Porto Santo - this island combines amazing beach and health resorts.
Madeira's indigenous Laurissilva forest - UNESCO World Natural Heritage.
ORIENTATION
Today Funchal, the Madeira capital, is a modern city with over 100.000 inhabitants and the main gateway to the archipelago. It is famous for its historical heritage and its beautiful geographical position. From Funchal you can get to know the rest of the island very easily.
The principal villages to visit would be Machico, Cmara de Lobos e Santa Cruz (in the Madeira Island) and Vila Baleira (in the Porto Santo Island). The Levadas, the Cape Giro, the Botanical Garden, the several belvederes and the walking routes are some of the things you shouldnt miss.
BEST TIME TO GO
The island has a pleasant weather all year round. Temperatures vary between the medium 23 C in summer and the medium 17 C in winter.
HOW TO GET THERE
Madeira International Airport is located about 30 minutes from Funchal. From the airport you can rent a car, take a taxi or travel by bus.
The Porto Santo Airport is right in Porto Santo/Vila Baleira and is just a 15 minute flight from Madeira International Airport. There is also a boat/ship service between the two islands.
TRAVELLING AROUND
Rent-a-car
Renting a car is probably the best way to visit the island.
Bus
There are three bus companies operating in the island: Horarios de Funchal, Rodeste and S.A.M.
Taxi
Taxis are available at Madeira and Porto Santo airports and the main hotels, and there are taxi ranks in a number of streets and squares in Funchal and Vila Baleira.
Boat
At Funchal Marina, you will find a variety of boats offering trips along the coast.
To get to the neighbouring island of Porto Santo, you can take the ferry, Lobo Marinho, which makes daily trips and also carries vehicles.
