Zanzibar is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Tanzania, formed by two main Islands of Unguja (usually referred to as Zanzibar Island), Pemba and nearby many other small islets.
These islands have beautiful typical villages and also the most incredible white sandy beaches and crystal clear water, surrounded by exuberant vegetation.
REASONS TO GO
The beautiful Stone Town, with its white houses, picturesque shops, mosques and squares
The Zanzibars amazing turquoise ocean is full of spectacular marine life and exquisite coral formations
Known as the Spice Island, Zanzibar produces a great variety of spices, to be seen on the fascinating Spice Tours
ORIENTATION
Unguja is located about 40 km east of Bagamoyo on the Tanzanian mainland. The island is not very hilly island and is about 85 km long and around 25 km wide. Most inhabitants live in the fertile regions of the north and west. The beaches and the coral reefs on the eastern coasts make them ideal for fishing villages, tourist guesthouses, and resorts.
Pemba, situated about 50 Km north of Unguja, is far less inhabited. The island has many steep hills full of palms, clove and rubber trees plantations, and with the Ngezi Forest in the north. There are many virgin and beautiful beaches in and around the numerous inlets and coves.
BEST TIME TO GO
Zanzibar enjoys a tropical climate that is mostly dominated by the Indian Ocean monsoons. The long rains, known as mwaka, arrive in March and last until late May or June. From July until October is the ideal time for visiting Zanzibar because the average temperature is 25 C, the air is dry and breezy and there is diminutive rainfall.
HOW TO GET THERE
By Boat
There are many ferries and catamarans that can take you between Dar es Salaam and the Island. The trip is beautiful and lasts about two hours approximately.
By plane
There are several flights from Dar to Zanzibar.
The best way to get to the city centre is by taxi.
TRAVELLING AROUND
The best way to visit the Stone Town is on foot, as the alleys are too narrow for cars. To get around the island you can rent a car; take a taxi or a dalla-dalla, which is a small minivan very common between the locals.
